23 Things for research: Blogging in the Academic Environment

As an extension of Things 4 and 5, I discovered a presentation that Ned Potter (@theREALwikiman) and Simon Davis (@sidavis21) gave for the Learning & Teaching Forum at the University of York on 23rd October 2013. It can be found on slideshare.

The presentation looks at what a blog is and why blogs are potentially useful. They are great for communicating, can be used in teaching and as a Virtual Learning Environment. The presentation discusses the benefits of individual and collaborative blogs (i.e. creating a blog jointly with someone else), RSS feeds, and provides hints and examples to help you get started.

I would recommend the presentation for those who are just starting out blogging and also for those who already have a blog. It may prove useful for them to rethink why they have a blog, how they are using it, and how (if possible) they can make it better.
